Who Is This Course For?

This course will interest students who wish to scientifically explore the composition, structure, properties and change of matter and apply that understanding to society and the environment.

This subject will benefit students who are interested in the use that human beings make of the planet’s resources and the impact of human activities on the environment. An understanding of chemistry and the application of this understanding helps students to appreciate the factors that influence the pursuit of science and to make informed decisions about modifying and interacting with nature.

No background knowledge is assumed. Some scientific reporting skills are highly desirable.

What Will I Learn?

The teacher must choose 3 of these per Semester, this will occur at teacher discretion, but all will be covered throughout the whole year.

  • Topic 1: Materials and their atoms
  • Topic 2: Combinations of atoms
  • Topic 3: Molecules
  • Topic 4: Mixtures and solutions
  • Topic 5: Acid and bases
  • Topic 6: Redox reactions

How will I be assessed?

Students complete four assessment tasks with a weighting of 25% each:

  • One practical investigation
  • One science as a human endeavour investigation
  • Two Skills and Applications Task
This subject leads to a Stage 2 subject with an external examination, so both Chemistry A & B will have a trial exam.
